About Saskia
Hi guys, I am Saskia, 32 years old and I am in with Miguel on this adventure.
I grew up in a relatively small place in the Netherlands. I studied Social Work close by and after graduation I started working as a Social Worker. It was during work when I had my first sailing experience. 2 years I went on a sailing holiday with the teenagers I was working with. I enjoyed it, but it was mostly working, so I did not catch the sailing virus yet.
I met Miguel in 2009 and slowly I got excited about travelling and being on the water. Now I am at the point where I moved into the boat, to be able to realise our dream of travelling by boat as soon as possible.
Are there other things in my life that I like to do? Yes! In my free time, I love to cook. I can spend hours searching for recipes and trying out new recipes.
Some of my hobbies are on hold, because of our dream to sail to the world. I used to have a motorbike, which I would take out for a ride every now and then and for a couple of years, I have had saxophone lessons. I am not brilliant at it, but I love the sound, playing with other people and trying to get better.
For now, the focus is on Saetta and sailing, which is very exciting!!
This blog for me is a way to document our adventures and I hope it will be something that allows other people to tag along with us 🙂
About Miguel
Born in Porto (Portugal) but grew all around Europe. Not all factual, but that’s what it feels. I was lucky to have parents that enjoy travelling. I remember our first big road trip in ’96 when we drove 10.000km and visited 10 countries around Europe in just under 4 weeks. Young and barely able to speak English, I remember enjoying immensely visiting all these new places, even though I was not always able to fully appreciate what was happening. And that was the start of my love for travelling.
Jumping a few years ahead, to my university years, heartbroken and unfulfilled, I decided to take action and start volunteering as a fire-fighter. Maybe giving back to others would help. Most of the work was not fighting fire but as ambulance personnel (think low-level paramedic). It felt good helping people in a time of need, despair and, most of the times, panic too. Not only that but it gave me another perspective on life. Seeing people dying or stuck in bed made me appreciate what I have and forces me to enjoy life while I can. Which for me meant travelling. A few years later I studied a year abroad in Slovakia and afterwards went on a couple of month euro rail trip. Back to Porto for the final year of studies, and couldn’t get away from the high I got from travelling, I start hosting people at my place and helping Erasmus students coming to Porto. That was an amazing year. Right about the time I met Saskia. Finally, I start getting enough money to travel longer and to finance my dream of getting a boat and truly extend my travels! You can read more about this in the post how-it-all-started.
What else can I say about myself? I had a few hobbies, mostly cooking and photography. But with Saetta and living with Saskia, these hobbies changed to sailing with Saskia and fixing the boat.
